It's a little sappy as well, and kind tonally stands apart from the rest of the album in an odd way.įascination Street. It's good, but not terribly engaging to me. The lone example of kookiness on the album, the stilted guitar/bass interplay and super crisp snare are super engaging. One I don't listen to often because it depresses the hell out of me. This song is so wind-strewn and icy feeling to me, with such profound ache in the guitar, and a great bassline out of Simon. It's such a pretty, enduring pop song, and the interplay between Robert and Simon as the intro builds into that first verse is exquisite. Nothing but blues and greens, and one of the most beautifully serene and vulnerable songs on the album, and in The Cure's catalog. A great example of The Cure's ability to layer simple parts into a complex sounding whole, and just a wonderfully wretched, bilious thing, kind of like The Kiss. Short, hard hitting lyrical section, a sound that washes over you like an opiate. This sounds like the evolution of All Cats are Grey to me. Sounds like a guy just luxuriating in his own crappitude.Ĭlosedown. It's an angry epic, honest, unflinching, filled with self loathing and a musical persistence that stands apart. It sounds like a B-Side, but I have a serious attachment to it.ĭisintegration. It's resigned, beautiful, pretends to be hopeless, but you hear the hope shining through. Beautiful vocal, beautiful bass lead, massive keys, and wonderful, reverb heavy drums. That opening chord tells you everything you need to know about this album. Nothing wrong with other people loving it, though (of course!), just don’t be too shocked if you’re ever at a Cure gig at the same time as I am and you see a small girl making finger guns to blow her brains out within 0.25 seconds of it starting up. (I am obviously well aware of why they always play it. So many amazing b sides from that era that will likely never see the light of day while Lovesong keeps getting rolled out. It’s fucking dull □ Gimme Fear of Ghosts instead. It’s never felt particularly romantic to me (yeah, yeah, I know what the lyrics are!) but, god. I find the song, even on record, to be a dirge. Plus the amount of god awful cover versions that it inspires. I’m pretty sure that aside from perhaps 3 (Meltdown, Hamburg 2002 and Hyde Park 2002, maybe?) of the 20 something times I’ve now seen them they always play it.
